KHULNA
SHIPYARD LTD
|
|
INTRODUCTION |
|
|
1. Khulna Shipyard a commercial enterprise
of BN, over the years has been
developed into a leading ship building and repair
organization. It also undertakes marine services
as well as manufacturing of engineering items in order to
support country’s industry including power sector.
2. The Shipyard works directly under the NHQ. It's purpose is
to help the customers in
their maritime operations through the effective
repair/maintenance boats and vessels.
|
|
|
|
|
3. This is achieved by the development and
construction of functional vessels, which we carry out in
continuous consultation with maritime operators. These ships
are specially designed and built to meet the operational and
commercial needs of our present and future customers.
4. In our striving for effective business
development, we consider continuity in the relationship with
both our customers and our suppliers is of the basic
importance. Satisfied customers are fundamental to our
success. Consequently, the multi-skilled work force and
professional management are always dedicated to the supply
of the best possible quality vessels and services.
5. Total Quality Management system has been
introduced on the basis of which Lloyds Register of shipping
certificate is issued.

BACKGROUND HISTORY |
|
6. KSY is about 43 years old. The
construction works of KSY started in 1954 under supervision
of the EPIDC with the technical support of West Germany.
After completion of works, production started on 27 Nov
1957. A British firm was appointed as consultant. Later
another firm from Switzerland was appointed for the same
job. Their contract was over in 1967. Afterwards the KSY was
running by its own expert engineers both technically and
administratively. The enterprise was
|
 |
once upon a time very
prestigious organization of the southern part of the
country. The project started production in 1957 with
loss and could not make any profit during the first five
years of it’s operation. From 1962-68 the company showed
little profit margin. Again from 1969-73 it suffered
loss.
|
|
The period 1973-84 can be termed
as golden period for the shipyard where it suffered no
loss and the highest amount of profit was in 1976-77
fiscal year. It had the working capability of 5041 tons
of steel. After 1984 till we took over, shipyard
remained as a sick industry and there was no sign of
profit. Various types of vessels like Gun Boat, Cargo
Vessels, Floating Cranes, Water barge, Water Boat, Tug,
Oil Tanker, pontoon, LCT, Trawlers, Launch etc, have so
far been constructed /repaired / renovated with reputation.
Besides these, many heavy duty spares for different
industries have also been made by this organization. It's
versatile dock facilities can accommodate a good no of ships
at a time for repair or rebuilding. This turned into a
losing concern due to multiple reasons. Of the many reasons
the most prominent one is that so far no Balancing
Modernizing Rehabilitation and Expansion (BMRE) has been
conducted here due to lack of capital. As a result the
overall infrastructure has been almost collapsed. Most of
the qualified officers and skill workers have left this
organization at various stages. From this state the Shipyard
was handed over to BN on 03 Oct 99 by the honorable Prime
Minister of the People Republic of Bangladesh. Rescue of
this organization from this deplorable state is no doubt a
challenging task for BN.
