BNS SHAHEED MOAZZAM

 

 
 

 
  1. Brief History. BNS SHAHEED MOAZZAM is an important training establishment of Bangladesh Navy. The base was commissioned on 16 Jan 1976 after the name of Late Lieutenant Commander MOAZZAM HOSSAIN, a martyr (Shaheed) of pre liberation movement of Bangladesh  

2. Location. BNS SHAHEED MOAZZAM is situated in the Rangamati Hill District in the midst of beautiful flora and fauna. It is about 60 kilometres north East of the metropolitan and port city of Chittagong. Situated at about 180 feet above the mean sea level and surrounded by the hills, mountains, lakes and forests. The base offers an exotic panoramic view. In fact it is a place of scenic beauty that often catches the eyes of many nature lovers.
 

 
3. Aim/Role of the Base. The aim of the base is to impart basic and advance training to sailors and advance training to officers. The responsibilities of this base are divided mainly into two parts:
 
 
a. Primary Responsibilities.
    (1)   To conduct basic training for the seaman and technical branch sailors.
(2)   To conduct advanced training for the technical branch sailors.
(3)   To monitor and supervise progress of officers attending graduation courses at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
(4)   To conduct specialization courses for technical branch officers.
 
 
b. Secondary Responsibilities.
    (1)   To provide training to the members of the sister services and foreign navies on some specialized fields.
(2)   To arrange deep diving training in the Kaptai Lake for divers.
(3)   To arrange boat handling, small arms firing and survival training including other extra curricular activities for member of the BN including Cadets of Bangladesh Naval Academy.
(4)   Support to Nation Building Activities, aid to civil power and render humanitarian assistance whenever called for.
 
4. Details of the Training Facilities Available.
 

a. Indoor Training Facilities. BNS SHAHEED MOAZZAM is equipped with many modern instructional facilities for conducting different courses including MESC and LEC. It has well equipped classrooms, modern laboratories, workshops, library, computer club, model rooms etc to conduct training of high standard. Some of the facilities are:
 

    (1)  Seamanship Model Room
(2)  Engineering Model Room.

 

       
    (3)  Electrical & Electronic Laboratories
(4)  Engineering Workshop
(5)  Computer Club.
(6)  Electronic Hobby Club for various design & project works.
(7)  Reference Library
b. Outdoor Training Facilities.
 

(1) Boat Pool. A boat pool with about 50 boats (including power boats and sailing boats) for various activities like Sailing, Pulling and Cruising etc.

 

(2) Survival Training Site. Deep forest and jungles and the difficult hilly terrains in the proximity provide the most appropriate site for survival training.

 

(3) Small Arms Firing Range.

 

 
(4) Sports and Pentathlon Ground.
 

 

 
 

.5. Training Facilities Available for Foreign Nationals. All the above mentioned indoor and outdoor facilities can be utilized by overseas students of foreign Navies.
 

 
6. Details of the Training Curriculum. The training school is the highest technical training institute of Bangladesh Navy. In fact, it is the nerve centre of all technical training activities. It has three wings, namely Seamanship School, Engineering School and Electrical School. Various types of courses conducted in this base are as follows:
 
aBasic Professional Courses. The basic professional course for the new entry sailors of Seaman, Engineering, Electrical and Radio Electrical branches are of 38 weeks duration and are designed to train the new entry sailors about their professional works to primarily suit the requirements at sea.

b.  Advanced Professional Courses. Advanced professional courses are:


(1) Specialization Course for Officers. Specialization Courses are post graduation level course namely Marine Engineering Specialization Course (MESC) for Engineering and Long Electrical Course (LEC) for Electrical branch officers. The duration of those courses are of 38 weeks. These courses are designed to train the mid level Electrical and Engineer Officers of Bangladesh and foreign navies on various specialized subjects and equipment. This course prepares the officers to perform the duties of departmental officer in fleet and to head the workshop in Dockyard/Shipyard.

(2) Leading Rank Qualifying Course. This course is of 42 weeks duration and designed for sailors of the technical branch for promotion to the Leading rank. The syllabus of this course is designed in light of technical education curriculum of Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB). This course covers most of the technical aspects required for maintenance and smooth operation of equipment onboard BN ships and also prepare the sailors to work independently on board ship or assigned place.

(3) Artificer Qualifying Course. Artificer qualifying course is of 74 weeks duration and conducted for the Leading rank sailors of the technical branch required for promotion to the rank of Petty Officer. On successful completion of this course the sailors are awarded with Diploma in Engineering, which is recognized by BTEB. This course prepares a sailor to run a particular section as an In-charge within his department.

(4) Chief Artificer Course. This course is of 10 weeks duration and it is the highest professional course for the Chief Petty Officers of technical branch. This post diploma course has been designed to provide a chance to recapitulate knowledge and experience gathered previously and as such to make the trainees professionally confident. This course helps them to prepare themselves for carrying out the duties of Departmental Officer of small Ships and/or In-charge of Base workshop.

(5) Branch Rank Common Course (Professional). This is a professional course for technical sailors selected for commission in the Navy. This course is of 16 weeks duration and is the last professional training for a sailor to become an officer. This course provides a chance to recapitulate knowledge and experience gathered previously and as such to make the trainees professionally confident. Some administrative information has been added to prepare them for carrying out the duties of Engineer and Electrical Officer of small ships and or In-charge Base Electrical Workshop
 

c. Short Courses. Besides regular courses, a number of short courses are also conducted on requirement basis. The short courses include:

(1) Ag S/Lt Technical Course. This is a course of 6 weeks duration for newly commissioned Executive branch officers of Bangladesh Navy. The course is designed to provide fair knowledge on electrical and mechanical engineering subjects to officers of Executive Branch and also to acquaint them with different electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering terminology, equipment and the system used in the navy.

(2) Frogmanship Course. A part of frogman ship course for Bangladesh Army officers and cadets are conducted by this base for duration of 01 week. This is basically a scuba orientation course done in shallow waters with open circuit diving sets.
 

(3) Scuba Diving Course. This course is conducted for 2 weeks duration for the officers of Bangladesh Army undergoing Commando Course where deep diving is conducted using both closed circuit and open circuit diving sets

(4) Watermanship Course. A part of watermanship course is conducted for duration of 01 week for the officers of Bangladesh Air Force to familiarize them with the techniques of survival at sea.

(5) Divisional and Leadership Course for Petty Officers. A part of Divisional and Leadership course for the duration of 01 week is conducted here to train on Practical Leadership Exercise (PLX) and Extra Curricular Activities for the promotion to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

(6) Radar and WT Maintenance Course. This is a 10 weeks duration Radar and WT equipment maintenance course for the EME core technicians of Bangladesh Army.

d. Other Activities. In addition to these short courses it also provides assistance to the Divers of Bangladesh Navy in carrying out Deep Diving Practice in the Kaptai Lake and provides assistance to the Cadets of Bangladesh Naval Academy while conducting their Practical Leadership Exercise
 

7. Other Facilities. This training base is equipped with modern computer facilities and hobby clubs. All participants of the regular course, specially the junior sailors are trained in the computer club to meet the basic requirements of the time. Technical sailors have the opportunity to join hobby club, which provides facilities to practice theoretical knowledge and ideas.
