SCHOOL OF MARITIME WARFARE AND TACTICS (SMWT)

 

 
 

1. Name of the Institution, Brief History, The name of the institution is School of Maritime Warfare and Tactics (SMWT). Since long Bangladesh Navy felt the requirement of a modern simulator based warfare Trg School to train her officers and sailors on various aspects of naval warfare and ship handling. Finally the process of establishing such a centre started in 1996 with the acquisition of 02 trainers namely Action Speed Tactical Trainer (ASTT) and Marine Bridge Simulator (MBS). With the successful installation of these two trainers in 1999 the school of Maritime Warfare and Tactics, a long cherished dream of BN, has come true. Presently the school has 5 major wings namely:
 

  a.  Action Speed Tactical Trainer (ASTT)
b.  Marine Bridge Simulator (MBS).
c.  Sonar Simulator (SONSIM).
d.  Electronic Warfare  Cell (EWC)
e.  Training Research Center (TRC)
 

2. Location. SMWT is located in the port city Chittagong, a distance of 5 kilometers north of Chittagong Shah Amanat International Air Port and 10 kilometers away from the city center. It is situated inside the naval base BNS ISSA KHAN.
 

 

3. Aim/Purpose of the Institution : The main purpose of SMWT is to impart realistic training to officers and sailors on various aspects of naval warfare, ship handling and operation of various weapons and sensors in different situation. Its mission is to increase ones understanding of the dynamics, planning and decision making process of warfare through war gaming and exercises. The SMWT plans, develops and conducts war games in support of operational requirements of BN. Thus current and future commanders and their staffs are given the opportunity to study warfare realistically and identity problems in peacetime. It provides facility to rehearse/ practice maritime activities in the simulator without actually going to sea. Based on the aim the objectives of the institute are as follows.

 

a.  To assist the students in acquiring broad knowledge on all aspects of maritime warfare.

b.  To train students on naval tactics involving deployment of various platforms, sensors and weapons
across the whole spectrum of naval operations,

c.  To develop student's skill in ship handling in a safe and controlled environment.

d.  To develop students skills in sonar operation and torpedo firing procedure.

e.  To evaluate and support BN EW systems

f.   Ascertain and project training requirement BN

4. Achievement of the Institution. SMWT could successfully create awareness and concept of naval warfare among the operations branch officers of BN through various courses and war gaming. Besides, this school is also considered as a milestone of BN capability in IT sector and shifting our concept from platform centric warfare to network centric warfare. Presently the school is conducting various courses of international standard.

5. Details of Training Facilities Available. Training in this institute is imparted through three different simulators, which are:

  a.  Action Speed Tactical Trainer (ASTT).
b.  Marine Bridge Simulator (MBS).
c.  Sonar Simulator (SONSIM).

6. Training Facilities Available of Foreign Nationals. The simulator in SMWT provides tools and environment, which can be used in planning exercises for single service, joint service and even multinational operations. Besides SMWT conducts various training courses. Foreign student officers are also taking part on the following:

  a.  Principal Warfare officer (PWO) Course.
b.  Maritime Warfare Tactics Course (MWTC).

7. Any Other Information. The institute also conducts training for NDC, AFWC, DSCSC and various long courses, JSC etc. SMWT conducts war game for BN Flotilla for command team training.
