BNS UMAR FAROOQ

 

1. Brief History. BNS UMAR FAROOQ was built in the United Kingdom. She was a Salisbury Class AD Frigate (Type 61), named HMS LANDAFF in the Royal Navy. Her keel was laid in 1953 and completed in 1958. Commissioned in Bangladesh Navy on 10 December 1976. She arrived in Bangladesh on 27 Mar 1977.

2. Location. The ship is stationed at Chittagong.

3. Role of the Ship. The ship is deployed to serve various purposes in the time of peace and war.

  a. Her peacetime roles are:
    (1)   Training of junior officers and sailors.
(2)   Anti piracy operations.
(3)   Anti smuggling operation.
(4)   Search and rescue operation.
(5)   Anti pollution operation.
(6)   Law enforcement.
(7)   Disaster relief.
(8)   Aid to civil power.
(9)   Diplomatic role.
(10)  Fishery protection.
 
  b. Her wartime roles are:
    (1)   Coastal defense.
(2)   Escort duties.
(3)   Defense against sea born invasion.
(4)   Protection of off shore installations.
(5)   Offensive operation on targets of opportunity.
 
4. Training Facilities Available.
 

a.   Fully equipped classroom.
b.   Dedicated training department headed by a Training Commander.
c.   Reproduction cell.
d.   Under Trainee Officers accommodation (Ladies and Gents)
e.   Qualified instructors.
 

5. Training Curriculum. Following training activities are carried out onboard this ship:
  a.   Midshipman Training.
b.   Practical sea training for Cadets of Bangladesh Naval Academy.
c.   Watch keeping, Competency, Charge Certificate examinations
      for Acting  Sub Lieutenant of different branches.
d.   Practical training on Gunnery, TAS, Navigation, Engineering and
      Electrical etc for trainee officers of specialization courses.
e.   Practical training on Gunnery, TAS, Navigation, Engineering and
      Electrical etc for trainee sailors of various professional courses.
 
6. Midshipman training and practical sea training are also conducted for foreign naval officers.
