BANGLADESH NAVY IN UNITED NATIONS PEACE KEEPING OPERATION

 

1.         UNIFIL-Lebanon.       The first ever Multinational Maritime Task Force under United Nation Interim Force in Lebanon was formed in 2010 to enforce UNSCR 1701 and 1884. Two Bangladesh Navy Ship OSMAN and MADHUMATI joined the MTF on May 2010. Other ship contributing countries are Germany, Turkey, Greece and Indonesia. After successful completion of one year tour of duty both the ships are redeployed for another one year upto May 2012. Bangladesh Navy is proud to be a member of elite maritime task force of united nation. BN ships are tasked with

a.        Maritime Interdiction operation.

b.        Surveillance on suspicious air craft and ships.

c.        Providing search and rescue assistance.

d.        Training of Lebanese Naval personnel.

2.         BANFRU-Sudan.      First independent Bangladesh Navy contingent was sent to Sudan as Force Riverine Unit in 2005. Till now, BN has completed 05 missions in Sudan successfully.This unit is comprised of six High Speed Boats, Two Recce Boat, one inflatable boat and one support vessel fitted with heavy and light machine guns. This unit played an important role to ensure law and order situation, transportation of UN personnel, emergency evacuation and medical support in 1300 km river route of White Nile and Sobat River. BNANFRU has achieved esteemed recognition of UNMIS for its critical role for implementing Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Sudan. Other tasks of FRU are:

a.        Transportation of ration and personnel in the remote mission areas.

b.        Providing medical support to the local people.

c.        Providing SAR and Diving assistance.

The hard work, professionalism and dedication of BN personnel has earned good name in the Mission area and in UN.

3.         Boat Detachment Unit in Ivory Cost.            Besides a full contingent in SUDAN, BN has deployed another Boat detachment unit in ONUCI-Ivory. It is equipped with Two Relief Boat with heavy and light Machine Gun. This unit is located at Abidjan and responsible for lagoon patrol and VVIP protection and evacuation.

 

MISSION AREA VISIT

1.         UNIFIL.           The Chief of the Naval Staff has visited the UNIFIL mission area in Lebanon from 22 Sep 2010 to 06 oct 2010 During his visit, CNS had call on with the Force commander at Lebanon and other High officials. He discussed about the bilateral matters during these meetings. 

2.         BANFRU.       ACNS (O) Rear Admiral Farid Habib has visited the UN mission area at Sudan (BANFRU) from 09  April 2010 to 17 April 2011. A team of representatives headed by ACNS(O) had call on with the UNMIS Force commander at Sudan and other high officials. The team also observed the operational activities of FRU in that area.

 

IMPORTANT POSTS AVAILED BY BN IN UN MISSIONS

1.           IVORY COAST (UNOCI): Capt A F M Saiduzzaman, (G), psc, BN (P No 337). He is deployed as Chief Civil Mil (CIMCOORD) in IVORY COAST (UNOCI).

2.           DARFUR (UNAMID): Capt Yahya Syed, (C), afwc, psc, BN (P No 385). He is deployed as Chief Mil Pers Offr (CMPO).

3.            LEBANON (UNIFIL): Capt M Mozammel Haque, (G), psc, BN Capt M Mozammel Haque, (G), psc, BN (P No 467). He is deployed as Contingent Commander BANCON-1 (BNS OSMAN). Cdr A S M Afzalul Haque, (TAS), psc, BN.  (CMPO). He is deployed as Contingent Commander BANCON-1 (BNS MADHUMATI).

4.            SUDAN (UNMIS): Capt B U AHMED, (G), psc, BN (P No 468). He is deployed as Contingent Commander Bangladesh Force Riverine Unit (BANFRU-6).

5.             LEBANON (UNIFIL): Cdr M Harun-ur-Rashid, (G), psc, BN (P No 411). He is deployed as Deputy Chief (NOC) for UNIFIL (LEBANON).

6.             UNHQ NEW YORK: Cdr Rajib Tripura, (E), psc, BN (P No 837). He is deployed as Logistic Officer (Fuel) UNHQ.
